Yes, It is Jaw-Dropping

April 10, 2010

We have made it to the Grand Canyon, coming into the park via the "back door" Desert View Entrance. First stop, Desert View overlook.

It is true, neither words nor pictures can really describe the first view of the canyon. It looks too big to be real. The North Rim seems beyond reach and the Colorado River on the floor of the canyon looks like a little stream. There is so much to see, that it would take forever to really look at it.

We are staying at the Mather Campground, which is only about half full, at best. April is supposed to be one of the best times to see the canyon, particularly if you want to hike down into it. Today, it reached about 60° at the South Rim where we are and 80° at the river. While there seemed to be quite a few people the Grand Canyon Village, where many hotels and services are located, I'm sure it will be twice as crowded in a couple of months.

We finally got the bicycles off of the rack and took a short ride to the village bookstore and to the market. We hope to acclimatize a bit with a longer ride tomorrow.

It is still a bit cool, with patches of snow on the ground, and it forecast to go below freezing tonight.
