Here we sit in Dodge City (Kansas) and I'm writing this very quickly over lunch at Cup of Jones, a small coffee, lunch and internet spot. (Strawberry-rhubarb pie just came out of the oven. Doesn't that just sound like spring?) We left Mesa Verde yesterday morning in the snow and sleet after two wonderful days of ruins and hiking. What a truly amazing place.

After being warned by fellow travelers and park rangers alike, we decided to skip Rocky Mountain National Park. May is just too early, too cold and there's still too much snow. If the mountains we crossed yesterday in southern Colorado (and RMNP is 400 miles north) yesterday is any indication, the snowpack is very deep indeed. We drove across most of Colorado yesterday and spent the night at a small state park. I expect the next few days will be driving, driving, eating, driving some more. We've been driving along US 50 through Kansas and the road is flat and straight for as far as you can see.
